"brilliantly realized" - The New York Times (about Tran(slate))
"voluptuous, elemental lyricism" - The New York Times
"a gifted Brazilian-American modernist" - The New York Times
"A technically formidable, wildly varied work that evolves in sputtering sections" - New York Times (about Tran(slate))
"An alluring array of sounds filled St. Paul's German Lutheran Church in Manhattan on Tuesday during a performance of Brazilian-born composer Felipe Lara's Voz dos Ventos (Voice of the Winds)...The lights were dimmed as what sounded like a chorus of deep breathers echoed through the church. It seemed as if more than three instruments were at work as unearthly timbres blended in a microtonal mash, the music flowing and ebbing in intensity as the low rumblings of the bassoon underpinned the bright sound of the flute."
- The New York Times
"one of our favorite up-and-coming composers" - Time Out New York
"Lara's two pieces, Livro dos Sonhos for clarinet and piano and Voz dos Ventos (a world premiere) for amplified flute, clarinet, and bassoon, exude energy. The instruments spar, interrupt and mirror each other and, at times, come together in mutual agreement. There are shrieks and slides, hissing, flutter-tonguing and almost percussive sounds that stretch the limits of instrumental possibilities. But throughout all this, Lara manages an internal architectural logic that shapes a curve from beginning to end."
- The Washington Post
"a highly regarded young composer" - The Boston Globe
"A piece for string quartet, in which the processes that control the studio-generated sounds have been translated into colorful and energetic textures for the strings."
- The Boston Globe (about Tran(slate))
"flamboyant, ever-surprising" - The Strad (about Corde Vocale)

November 1st 2009 Interdiciplinary project "Desenhando na Mata" took place in São Francisco Xavier, Brazil, located in the Atlantic Forrest, more precisely in the Mantiqueira mountain range. A recording of Onda, for orchestra, was presented while visual artists including Cinthia Crelier, Flávio Castellan, Gabriela Mariano, and students from São Paulo transferred their impressions and reactions to a large panel (7'2" by 4'), in real time, while listening to the work. After the first painting was finished, I connected with the artists via Skype, from New York, and we had a brief discussion about my original intentions while composing the work. After everyone became more familiar with the general intent of the work a second panel was made, also in real-time. Video artists Roberto Fachini and Mayara Rodrigues captured the two versions of the work-in-process with two video cameras, and a DVD will be released with the juxtaposition of both panels, slowly crystallizing two collective subjectivities. Several stages of the process were frozen in the form of photographs that were taken during the entire experience. The collaboration was presented by the Espaço Cultural Ventos Uivantes (ECVU), a nucleus of Associação Cultural Jatobá (AJA), and the non-profit organization Instituto Acáia, São Paulo.
