Program Notes

Mosaic Maze (2024), composed for a large chamber ensemble, extends my investigation into self-similar relationships between macro and micro-articulations within the musical experience. In this composition, five distinct and recognizable musical characters/textures (Blocks/Original, Points, Noise, Blocks/Translations, Song) are assigned to five recurring and relative temporal durations (3, 8, 2, 5, 13), which subsequently influence the proportions of the entire piece, each section, each phrase, and even the smallest rhythmic motifs.

The musical material unfolds as a fluid, ever-changing mosaic, imbued with vibrant colors, embarking on a journey through an imaginary, fractal-like labyrinth. The music frequently navigates sharp turns, encounters dead-ends, revisits familiar territories, gets entangled in loops, and explores new vistas, continuously inviting the listener to zoom in and out of each musical character's varying magnitudes.
